Epic Janet (Forever) Young Beasley

Following Janet’s participation in the Every Child is Entitled to Innocence series which opened with Janet’s heart-warming story about her childhood, I asked Janet to come on the Plum Tree Blog to tell us all about her fabulous new release, Hidden Earth, Volume 1 Maycly – Parts 1, 2, and 3

After eight long years of passion, dedication, blood, sweat, and tears, Maycly, was published on Janet’s birthday. Janet told me how she had worked sixty hour weeks. Every word was weighed with careful thought. Research took hours as she eliminated the “norms” of her genre. She spent nearly eight months writing the first battle scene. She watched film clips galore, then closed her eyes and listened to the battle scenes of epic movies just to bring her readers more than just “clanking swords.” Tears flowed. Exhaustion was a regular occurrence as writer’s block tried its best to thwart her creativity, but Janet is not a quitter.  She fought hard to bring her amazing epic to fruition.

Her journey to publication did not stop with the story of Maycly. In Janet’s earlier years, she owned and operated a “BARK”-ery and a bakery. When given the privilege of taking over the family business of gourmet dog treats, she expanded the line to 11 flavors. She added confections for people. Janet developed four different themed restaurants, each complete with venue layout and design, menus, and recipes. The dog treats and people sweets were making their way across the nation once again.

Health issues stopped Janet in her tracks, and her dream of being a restaurant and bakery owner was snuffed out permanently. As she continued to write, her husband put the much needed wind into her sails by suggesting she channel all her hard work and dedication that had been poured into the bakery, dog treats, and restaurants into Maycly, instead. Her imagination ran wild, and her “hard work” is now found referred to as treasured restaurants on Maycly. And Gramma Hilda’s Doggie Delights™ are favored treats in the imaginary world of Janet’s creation.

Through an episode of fate, Janet reconnected with a dear friend on Facebook. Long story short…you can now purchase Gramma Hilda’s Doggie Delights™ once again, and this time through DebbiesPetTreatsAndPeopleSweets.com

Janet took what she likes to call the Spielberg approach to marketing. She began promoting Maycly a year before it was released. She created two book trailers, one for “Coming2012”and one for “Available on Amazon.” To experience the book trailer for Maycly says it all. It has brought her reading audience into the “realness” of this series.

Half way into the project of Maycly Janet’s sister, Dar Bagby, contacted her, asking if she would like a few illustrations of the characters. Janet was thrilled, and the writer/illustrator bond was formed in an instant. Janet and Dar live at opposites end of a highway.  Janet lives at the southern end of Florida; Dar lives at the northern end of Michigan. Together they spent many hours on the internet discussing characters, creatures, flora, and dwellings. By the end of the project, there were over 70 illustrations. The illustrations appear in black and white in the paperback, and in color in the ebooks.

Janet’s grand ideas continued to expand. She has put together an entire souvenir shop where Maycly fans can shop for the latest T-shirts, hats, mugs, blankets, doggie apparel, and more, all boasting Dar’s illustrations of the things of Maycly…both good and evil.

Not too far into the future Maycly fans will be able to get their hands on a full color illustration book: The Chukkons Say, ‘Ye Need ta Be a-Seein’ Maycly. This book will also give readers an in depth look at the things of Maycly through detailed descriptions.

After the illustration book will come a cook book filled with the restaurants, menus, recipes, and histories of the characters who own them. The cook book will be titled More Than Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup.

Janet’s intentions for Maycly were to make it a trilogy and stop there. As she wrote, and her creativity blossomed, she turned Maycly into a three part story that will be followed by five more novels. She is currently in the writing process of volume 2, and has the others in outline form.

About Dr Niamh Children's Books

I spent many an early morning dancing to the tunes of the little people. Very soon, they began to trust me, (Fairies seldom trust humans, as humans do very strange things to fairies and to fairyland), but I could dance a fine jig, pirouette often, sing a long song and recite a poem, all of which is of very great interest to fairies. They taught me some of their ancient secrets about bees and butterflies, worms and magic bears who know such an awful lot about everything. They also taught me secrets about science and the sky, and how to grow up into someone who is wise (wise enough to still believe in fairies). I like to share some of those mysteries with boys and girls (and grown-ups who still have magic in them) who are inquisitive but can also keep a secret. Sssssssssh! Promise you won’t tell anyone… Are you ready? Now listen well, to the stories I will tell…

Hi Janet, it was great to hear about the epic journey of the author behind the work, and I loved the technique of playing over the battle scenes and then closing your eyes to get in the moment, after all that’s what writing and reading is all about for me. That being in the moment. Congratulations, I wish you every success with Maycly. Your determination, imagination and commitment are to be applauded. Us writers don’t get enough standing ovations after all 🙂
