Contemporary Marsha Randolph

Despite the number of classifications available for books there are so many stereotypes associated with each I cringe at the thought of placing my books under any particular genre.  Technically I write Urban Christian Fiction yet after visiting an Urban Christian Fiction site I was not pleased with the association.  If I tell people I write women’s fiction it will limit my audience to those who like “girly” books. Then there is the general classification African-American Fiction (Ugh) though good for sales during Black History month it is just as limiting as Women’s fiction.

I do appreciate the clean and simple category my book is listed under at Orangeberry Books: Contemporary.

I believe there is no stereo-type associated with this genre and therefore the cover, title and ‘about’ section become very important. The field is open to Christian and non-Christian, male and female, as well as people of all ethnicities. I consider my books reality based though biblically inspired which makes them suitable for anyone.

I love taking a biblical character and modernizing her story such as Vashtai who was married to King Xerxes for quite a while and then replaced with Esther.  In “The Truth About Vashtai” the reader is taken on one woman’s journey as she learns to gain control of her life after her divorce to the man she thought she would be with forever.  Ironically, recently, I was talking to a woman who was on antidepressants because she was going through a divorce after twenty years of marriage.  My next book “Ishmael’s Mother is based on the character Haggar, she had a baby by a married man. And I have also completed the draft of a book discussing different women in a community called Shunem, there I talk about Leah a woman married to a man who openly loved someone else.

I began writing fiction under the name Marsha Randolph adding the “L” later because I have since learned there is a photographer named Marsha Randolph living in the same state I do. Recently I began using M L Floyd to reflect a more serious aspect of my writing; Inspirational Thought. These eBook available are available via Smashwords.

I have known since 1995 that I wanted to write. Despite having 5 websites, a guest blog position on another site, two books out, 3 books in various forms of editing, a book I am getting ready to convert to a screenplay and several books I plan on writing I did not think of myself as a writer until recently. I was talking to a friend one day and I said: “I was born to be a writer.”  That day I became a writer.

  1. Sometimes when I write I can’t decide if I got the idea from the bible or from television. Women having babies by married men! Oh my. But it is not a talk show it is the bible. Two women who know each other having not one child but two or more by the same man and they know about each other. No, it is not a Soap Opera it is the bible.
All I want to know is how do these women cope? I have my own ideas and this is what I write about; women overcoming their dependence on men and women learning how to reach their maximum potential.

I’m thankful for Marsha having the heart to help us understand that Bible stories are real stories about real people who struggled through life like the rest of us but had a richer life because they allowed God to be a part of it. Thanks, again, Marsha.

I have a sense of what Marsha is talking about when discussing about her book(s) and what genre they fit in or should fit into. No author wants to limit the availability of their books based on a genre that doesn’t quite grasp the essence of their work. Genre labeling is or can be another way of “stereotyping” an author to a particular genre but in order to find an author of a particular interest to the reader it is one of the evils authors have to deal with but are definitely not limited to. I applaud Marsha for her decision to choose the genre that best fits her work, rather than a genre that defines her work, and by that I mean, puts up borders or walls that no reader dare breach. Reading is all about discovering, to step outside our comfort zones and this includes reading books we don’t or would not normally read. How else do we learn if we don’t step beyond what we are used to? Who knows, I may myself pick up her book and begin reading what sounds like an author with a purpose. She may have something to teach me.

  7. Oh Marsha, I agree with you. I love the clean, easy way to categorize your genre. It seems as though so many books nowadays are placed in such a narrow category, that good ol’ realistic fiction is left by the wayside! I also must say that I love your cover! It’s fascinating 😀
