“A handsome, colourful butterfly with beating wings came fluttering by. He made no whisper, made no sound, as he flitted and floated high above ground…”

In celebration that I will be back at Wisley Gardens next weekend reading Bellamy The Butterfly, I have decided to dedicate this week on my blog to those wonderful little creatures that captivate the imaginations of poets and artists alike. All week, I will be posting snippets of inspiration about butterflies ~ from photography, to poetry, to alliteration and art. I hope you will enjoy this and join me here.

This is the butterfly originally created by the wonderful Marta Perine-Bacon and coloured by me!

The challenge of the Pa Dug & Rosie series was to tell factual stories about how everything in the garden serves a purpose ~ including bees, butterflies, and worms and to attempt to bring poetry to science by writing the stories all in rhyme . Children learn better through rhyme, rhythm and onomatopoeia. I have re-released Biddle The Bee and Bellamy the Butterfly and given them their own voices. Bellamy, I imagine, has a laid-back voice…lots of lovely words describe him…, flitter, float,  flutter ~ I can’t imagine him being in a hurry, can you? I added quizzes to the books also, to help little learners to know what they they know!

It is a great pleasure to teach children about these wonderful garden creatures. Pollinators are so very important to all of us. I hope to put my passion for environmental issues into bringing magic to these stories for little ones and pass on some of that passion to them!

Available in kindle and paperback on Amazon. You can find all my books on Amazon HERE

About Dr Niamh

When I was a little girl (a very, very long time ago), I used to love learning new, really big words like ‘discombobulate’. As I grew, my love of words grew too, until I loved them so much, I could not stop writing them down. One day, as I was scribbling a particular word, a very peculiar thing happened. The word shouted at me, “Stop! Don’t put me there!” As you can imagine, I was shocked and nearly fell off my chair. When I recovered somewhat, I said to the word, “Could you stop shouting, please? I am not used to it.” Can you guess what happened next? No! I thought not. The word said, “I might be small, but I will misbehave if you do not use me properly. I will not tell the story you would like me to tell. I will say something entirely different!” I dropped my pen. I hoped that by dropping my pen, the word would stop talking. Alas! It did not. It carried on chitterchobbling, even after the ink had dried. I was in a pickle. I could not allow my words to run away with my story, now could I? I don’t know about you, but when this sort of thing happens, there is only one thing left to do if you prefer not to spend your time arguing. “Very well,” said I. “I will do as you ask if you will just be quiet and allow me to concentrate.” Since that day, I have been paying special attention to every word I invite into my stories. After all, a story should say exactly what it means to say and not be led astray. With love from Dr. Niamh, Ph.D in Learning Through The Imagination and Founder of Dr Niamh Children's Books. www.drniamhchildrensbooks.com

Butterflies are beautiful. There is a hiking trail in the mountains on the eastern border of my city that will take you to a small meadow that is full of them during the summer. It is a wonderful place to write or just recharge yourself.

Wonderful endeavor Niamh. With information and appreciation children will find it difficult to wantonly destroy nature. Yeah! And with Love…..hopefully also heal our beautiful earth.

It sounds like your Bellamy book was very well received. That’s great you’ve been asked to come back and share your other books. I love butterflies and used to write about the migration of the Monarchs every fall from Canada and Lake Erie to Ohio, where the rested before the left for the winter spot in Mexico.
