George’s Frog…The proofs Are In!
We have just received the proof of George’s Frog…the first in a series of little books to help young children learn about their emotions. This is a story about what happens when George’s Frog dies. The illustrations are by award-winning artist, Maria Antonietta Terrana. Story and idea by me (Niamh Clune). These will be published by Plum Tree Books in the New Year! Yay! We will be sending out copies to reviewers in the New Year!

About Dr Niamh
When I was a little girl (a very, very long time ago), I used to love learning new, really big words like ‘discombobulate’. As I grew, my love of words grew too, until I loved them so much, I could not stop writing them down.
One day, as I was scribbling a particular word, a very peculiar thing happened. The word shouted at me, “Stop! Don’t put me there!” As you can imagine, I was shocked and nearly fell off my chair. When I recovered somewhat, I said to the word, “Could you stop shouting, please? I am not used to it.”
Can you guess what happened next? No! I thought not. The word said, “I might be small, but I will misbehave if you do not use me properly. I will not tell the story you would like me to tell. I will say something entirely different!”
I dropped my pen. I hoped that by dropping my pen, the word would stop talking. Alas! It did not. It carried on chitterchobbling, even after the ink had dried. I was in a pickle. I could not allow my words to run away with my story, now could I?
I don’t know about you, but when this sort of thing happens, there is only one thing left to do if you prefer not to spend your time arguing. “Very well,” said I. “I will do as you ask if you will just be quiet and allow me to concentrate.”
Since that day, I have been paying special attention to every word I invite into my stories. After all, a story should say exactly what it means to say and not be led astray.

I think that a series of books to help children learn about their emotions is a marvelous idea! Emotions can be very difficult for an adult to understand, let alone a child. As a very emotional child (some would say hyper-sensitive, some would still say that), it would have been nice to have someone or something that would have helped me process the world as I experienced it. Great idea….. I hope the series does well.

Thank you…it is for very young children. Just teaching them that it is OK to cry, feel sad, angry etc.,

It is very important for them to know that their feelings are okay to have. I think that sometimes adults forget what it was like to be a child and feeling confused about our emotions. I try to never forget what being a child is like.

That’s wonderful…. I had a very inspiring grandma too. She taught me a lot, and I hope that she learned from me as well.

Very good point. I love the opinions and thoughts of children. They are not so colored by the onslaught we receive as adults, and are unfettered and honest.

This is marvelous. Something to add to your wanting to teach children it is okay to have emotions. That the old adage: “Children should be seen but nott heard,” can be well buried. A new world and a new acceptance for children and a way to save from those who would still support that children have nothing to offer. When inactuality, children have more to offer the world then most adults, with the acception of those adults who haven’t forgptten how to keep the child alive inside with an on going imagination and the growing and listening and learning spirit. Cannot wait to see this new book. It will be on my list of books to collect for Luke. my very young nephew, who gets all the love in the world for everyone around him. Thanks Niamh and Maria for what promises to be a wonderful book and a great addition to the PlumTree Books collection. 🙂
